Bob Ainsworth won’t be getting my vote

Bob Ainsworth

We have a general election coming up and I won’t be voting for my current MP, Bob Ainsworth. And the reason is simple, I asked him about the Evony thing and his reply was, to me, less than helpful. Judge for yourself:

Hi,

I am a constituent of yours.
I have a big problem in that I am being sued by an American front company for a Chinese video game (Evony) in an Australian court!

Firstly, Evony are indulging in litigation tourism of the very worst kind, they are using the Australian legal system in an attempt to make it impossible for me to defend myself properly. Australia has reciprocal arrangements with the UK for enforcing judgement.

Secondly what they are doing is a threat to the freedom of speech of tens of millions of bloggers around the world, if we can’t write the truth because the Australian legal system is sitting waiting to zap us then it is a sad day for everyone.

Is there anything you can do about this, please?

regards,

Bruce

Was there any reason to vote for him in the first place. I’d be dissapointed if you did anyway considering the poor support he has given to our troops around the world and the shocking lack of equipment they have. More reason there than for a blogger who got himself into trouble.

And are you planning to write to the people who will eventually stand against him?

@ Steven.
I asked Ed Vaizey and he offered to take it up with senior people he knows at the Chinese embassy.
However Bob Ainsworth has special powers and responsibilities as my MP and is choosing to ignore them.
Evony are trying to create a new precedent in libel tourism where a plaintiff from one country sues a defendent from a second country in a third country.
They claim that this is OK because an article published on the internet is published everywhere.
If they succeed it will open the floodgates of reputation management.
And Bob is washing his hands of it.

Do you think it would help if we all contacted our MPs? Perhaps you could put together a short summary of the problem, with references, for us to use in our emails?

@Ian,
Good idea. Draft MP letter here: http://www.bruceongames.com/2009/10/20/help-defeat-evony/

You’re lucky. If you sent such a letter to your ostensible political representative in the US, they would send you back a form letter with a request for donations.

You are also lucky that the political establishment has no innate interest against you. Otherwise you would see Evony, various government agencies, and all the mainstream press they can pay for all echoing each other in however they choose to stamp you as the villain.
