Interesting read, reminds me of this article I read in the New York Times of how the process of 'Gold Farming' is done, it's systematic implications and backlash. I am over in ShangHai at the moment and yes it does seem that MMOs are very popular over here, as expected.

The losses for Western game firms of fighting rather than embracing gold farming could be even bigger. The (say) US$1bn is what happens when gold trading is against the rules (and hence demand is suppressed).

When Sony legalised real-money trading on a couple of their Everquest II servers, the amount being spent by players was more than five times what players spend when game companies do not permit trading. So that US$1bn could easily be US$5bn.

Of course Asian game companies spotted this some while back; hence making the "free-play, item-pay" approach their main model.

Excellent post! I started to comment here, and then bumped to Ben Zeigler's post at Double Buffered talking about subs which seemed to say the complete opposite, which made the comment evolve into something that was best blogged. :)
