Nintendo was genius for making a console designed for the casual gamer. after all these days you're not a hardcore gamer unless you own halo, halo 2, and halo 3. why? because the gaming industry says so. Nintendo named its syestem wii because they recognize that a console is nothing if no one plays it. they want feedback from gamers to know what gamers want. then create the content that the gamers want. other makers insist that you buy their game for whatever reason.

The wii haters just don't understand it. they see the cartoony style of wii sports and think its a kids consol. Then parents buy it for their kids and supply the kids whatever they want for the wii only to later find out that there are some games with more adult content. People just don't know how to treat the wii. they are slightly unsettled by it and believe its only a passing fad.

I agree with your observation that Wii players are probably more casual and don't play it every day.

When I was younger I played for dozens of hours a week. Now I'll fit in an hour or two after work, but only if there's a game out that I want to play, otherwise my Wii sits idle for weeks at a time. The last time I played was Metroid 3. Mario Galaxy will be next, after that who knows?

But it's fine, because it's not like I payed a lot for it.

Nintendo is solid, that's for sure. It's the current leader in this generation, and this leadership could continue for several years if the company plays its cards right.

Good points on the strange market behavior. Metroid languishes because it belongs to a different market. If the game were to be remade for either the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, I think the numbers would be different.

One thing you must know about Nintendo--while the company ranked third in the last generation, it was earning more than Microsoft's game division. The original Xbox was a money pit for Microsoft, and if I'm not mistaken, I think they only started making money with the 360 (and I'm not even sure if this is already happening, or Microsoft is merely projecting that they will make money in this generation).

While Nintendo products aren't bleeding-edge when it comes to technology, each unit that the company sells is making a profit compared to both Microsoft and Sony. Yes, this applied even with the GameCube, so ranking third last generation isn't so bad after all.
